As the results of Super Tuesday are finally settling in the hearts and minds of this nation, almost two things are certain — Trump or Clinton have a decent shot at becoming president. I will first and foremost admit that this troubles me, deeply; however, I was able to spend some time with a Trump supporter yesterday, and it helped me better understand how someone can support him. Now, this is one of those articles where I still don’t like the idea of him becoming president, but I have grown more sympathetic to people that think he should, and I have come to grips with the reality that it probably won’t be the end of the world, and if it is, then Praise Jesus!
First, Trump has done alot for veterans. He recently raised over $6 million, and he personally donated $1 million. As a veteran, I must admit the nobility in such a cause. I am glad that someone is standing up for the troops, hopefully ensuring they are not homeless, jobless, or abandoned — a far to common problem. He is especially liked among Vietnam veterans. This may sound strange, but it also makes sense. When surveying the rest of the mainline candidates, I can see how someone would think that Trump is still the best option. I believe they are settling by not considering a 3rd party candidate, but I digress.
In short, Trump is a brilliant entrepreneur, but I differ with him on many topics. The two I chose to address today — immigration and the war on drugs. These are not two small topics, and they are actually related. For instance, many illegal immigrants come here through the illegal drug trade. They need a way to get to the United States, and they are offered safe passage in exchange for performing certain actions. I bet you can fill in the blanks. These immigrants were hoodwinked. Now they are 1000s of miles from home, in a country that doesn’t want them — despite the fact that they continue to work really hard, and they get nowhere. They accept their life because it is better and safer than it was in gang-ridden Mexico, but they see the lazy and prosperous around them, and wonder, “Why can’t I have what they have?” It’s a typical human emotion. They want the war on drugs to end because they see the blood run deep in their homes back in Mexico. I want it for them, too. That’s why I take the time to write the articles and post stuff about it.
I am glad Trump supports the troops, but that is not going to be enough to really satisfy a growing wave of young American voters who believe in life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness…not just for us, but for our beloved Canadian and Mexican neighbors, and for all people groups representative of the American population. This country was built on immigration, rebellion, and diversity, and I have a huge secret to share — it hasn’t changed. Like it or leave it, this is the United States. Even better, Texans are even truer to the cause, but that’s just my biased. There are people all over the US putting up a good fight, and it’s both exciting and scary to watch.
So, if you find yourself in the middle of this interesting historical debacle (which is exactly what it is), then rest assured knowing that History repeats itself, meaning Liberty will prevail. In my personal opinion, God has not ceased to be God, and we still serve a God and King that saves through the death and resurrection of his Son, Jesus. We need to stick together, listen to each other, learn from one another, and live what we believe. That is the only way to get this country back on track. It’s not there, but it’s LOADED with potential. I encourage you to give it some thought, prayer, meditation, or ask your friend or neighbor. You may find that we have more in common than we have in difference, even if we exist in different places economically, racially, politically, religiously, culturally, and geographically. This is America. It’s time to start acting like it.
So, I won’t be voting Trump for president, but I can totally understand why people vote that way. I have a new found respect for my Trump-following brethren, and I would share a meal and a drink with them anyday. Who knows, we might even become best friends. Strange things happen when people get together and love one another.
